From Brett to Rett: The Past and the Future
Brett Gaddy, Out-Going Cass Quarterback

The Colonels starting quarterback Brett Gaddy graduated last year leaving an opening in Cass’ offense. This year the quarterback position is being shared between sophomore, Logan Nelson, and junior, Rett Moore. However, it was Moore who opened the season’s play against the Adairsville Tigers.

Rett Moore, Cass Quarterback, Junior

Moore is a junior at Cass and for the past two years, he’s been the quarterback on the Junior Varsity team, so when Gaddy graduated in 2017, Moore was the likely choice for the position of Varsity quarterback.

Gaddy played for the Colonels all four years, but he didn’t take over as quarterback until his senior year. Coming off a winning 2015 season (6-4), the 2016 season (3-7) was a tough adjustment for the Colonels following a GHSA reclassification which pitted the new quarterback and team against 3 teams that would go on to finish top 10 in the state. Cass is currently still playing in this same competitive 7-AAAAA region, but the Colonels are always focusing on what they can control. Head Coach Bobby Hughes explained in an interview with Bartow Sports Zone, “Our off-season work has been better than it has ever been. Our guys understand we have to do everything we can to get bigger in the weight room, faster, stronger, and bring our best effort. We talk about controlling the things we can control. We can’t control what the opponent does or what an official calls or doesn’t call. We can’t control the weather. We simply have to take control of ourselves and make that work to our advantage.” Cass is looking to control the field this Friday night against the Hiram Hornets in Hiram.

When asked, Gaddy said, “The best feeling was winning my first game as starting quarterback. It was my responsibility to make the right reads for plays and to make the right calls. It felt good to know I had done something right.”

“I remember feeling nervous and anxious before my first game,” Gaddy says. Moore admits that he felt similarly throughout the day but when game time arrived, he felt “hyped up.” While the Cass Colonels didn’t win their opening season game against the Adairsville Tigers, much can be said for how Moore and his teammates are working together. The only advice Gaddy had for Moore was to “just relax and play hard.”

Gaddy graduated with the class of 2017 and is now a freshman at LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia. He continues to play football there and says, “It’s a lot more work in college. It’s a lot more terminology and more plays to study.” Moore commented that as of now he doesn’t plan to continue playing in college, but it’s not completely out of the question.

The fans look forward to watching the Colonels this season under the Friday Night Lights.
