Journalism’s Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament!

Journalisms Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament!

The game we all know and love, Rock Paper Scissors, originated from Japan in the 17th century. By the 20th century, it had spread past Asia to the west. It hit Britain in 1924, France in 1927, and America in 1932. It is now commonly used for its simplicity in settling disputes or making decisions. It is so popular that there’s now a Rock Paper Scissors Association. On their website, you can find strategies on how to win, become a member, participate in tournaments, and shop for merch!

I, Yahaira Hernandez, held a Rock Paper Scissors Tournament in Mrs. Armona’s 4th-period journalism class. The 16 competitors were randomly placed in a bracket and the tournament began. First up was Cooper Shane vs. Jackson Jones. Next went Mrs. Armona and Ashton Mahatoo. Following Isabel Navarro vs Payton Tatusko, Alexis Frias vs Ethan Shewchuk, Kaitlyn Beaver vs Emma Buffington, Collin Armona vs Luke Martin, Jaden Musaccio vs Jose Moctezuma, and Trey Scott vs Bryan Wickenheiser. Eliminated at the very first round was Jackson, Ashton, Isabel, Alexis, Kaitlyn, Luke, Jose, and Bryan. “I was excited thinking I was going to win; however, I faced the powerful Jaden and was no match. After my loss, it felt like a stake in my chest. Sadly, I didn’t even make it to the second round,” stated Jose Moctezuma.

Moving along the bracket, competing now was Cooper vs Armona, Payton vs Ethan, Emma vs Collin, and Jaden vs Trey. After this round, the semi-finalists were Mrs. Armona, Payton, Collin, and Jaden. Left behind was Cooper Shane who states, “I gave it my all, but in the end, it wasn’t enough. I dishonored my family. I must wear a bag over my face in public. I laid it all on the line and I lost it all in that tournament.”

In the Semi-Finals, Armona defeats Payton and Jaden conquers Collin. The two finalists had made it, Armona and Jaden. After everything they’d been through to get here, it was time to play their last game and determine the winner. Best out of three, Armona takes the lead. However, Jaden wins round 2. The ladies are now tied. As the last call is drawn, Armona plays paper, Jaden plays scissors. Jaden finally triumphs Armona and is named 4th period’s national champion of Rock Paper Scissors.

“I might be Valedictorian of my class, but that comes nowhere near the level of importance and excitement as winning this tournament.” -Jaden Mussacio
