Lady Colonels Soccer Fight Hard to Reach State

Last year, the lady colonels soccer team dominated the region and attended the state playoffs in the third seat. It was a hard fought game against Buford, but resulted in a loss for the first round of playoffs.  With the loss of only four seniors, the girls were expected to make a return.

Region play started February 26th against the historic first place holder, Carrolton. The colonels had a rough time getting started and ended up losing 6-0. The next team up was Rome, with another disappointing loss, 6-1. After this frustrating start of the region, the girls were hungry for a win. On March 8th, they played Woodland at home, the county rival. The game started slow, but the girls jumped out on top of Woodland and scored 10 goals to their two. East Paulding was next with a strained loss of 5-4. On Friday, the girls played Hiram and won with a score of 4-0. Logan Vermass scored all four goals with assists from Briana Ochoa, Leidi Toribio, and Madison Shook. It was a well needed win, and a kick start to their self-dubbed “mojo.”

Right now, the girls sit low in the region, but have one seat left in the State playoffs. The top four teams attend and with a record of 2-3, the girls must win their next 3 games to snag the fourth seat. The team plays Villa Rica on Friday, the 22nd. Villa Rica hasn’t played as many regions games but sits now with a record of 1-2. With similar play and goals of attending state, it should be a tight game
