March 1st marks the beginning of a beneficial period where women’s contribution to society is celebrated. From Susan B. Anthony to Harriet Tubman, women in history have shown time and time again why this celebration is so important for all nations. The history of all these women can help inspire our future generations of young women to show them they should be celebrated and have a right to all the same opportunities men have.
When did Women’s History Month begin?
A local celebration in 1978 at Santa Rosa, California, lasting all week started the celebration of Women’s History Month. (Women’s History Museum). This also started on March 8th marking International Women’s History Day. The first Women’s History Day was signed during 1980, the week of March 8 by President Jimmy Carter. Now the tradition is celebrated worldwide. The celebration is very important to show gender equality and to appreciate all the achievements women have made now and in history.
What is Gender equality and what are the benefits?
Gender equality is the access for all genders to have the same opportunities and rights. Having gender equality can help so much more than just people individually, such as reducing poverty for an economy, healthier communities, and reducing violence. This can be important to help an economy grow and flourish. By having women work, we can make more money and help overall with women and children in poverty and can increase our GDP by 7.2 trillion. We can also have healthier communities and families have better health when women are educated. Women in the workplace create awareness for themselves by recognizing that they shouldn’t be discriminated against and overall should have the treatment as men do.
Why should all women be celebrated?
Women’s History Month/Day should not only celebrate the greatness of women in the workplace but also celebrate the women who help shape society, moms. Everyone who has ever lived has a mother. Having a woman figure in your life provides comfort, safety, nurture, and love for a person. According to 9th grade student Rylee Bullock “I think out of all women in my life my mom should be appreciated the most. My mom had to deal with raising me at a young age and putting me before all others including herself and that’s a hard thing to do as a person.” They help shape the future generation and set an example for their children on how to be a good person in life. Mothers should be celebrated to show that you don’t have to physically be working for an establishment to be celebrated. Mothers show their perseverance through the tough times by giving guidance to future leaders. Young women should not only be inspired by women in the workplace but by their mothers at home.
In conclusion, all women deserve to be celebrated not only just for one month but every day. It is important to help uplift our women now and the young women in our future generation. Bullock says “Being a woman is a big responsibility in life. Women can create life while still living on their own. Being a woman can be hard, and women can do a lot of things a man can’t, and women play an important role in both society and in a single household.”
We can see how far women have come since the 19th century when women claimed their rights, this was done during the Women’s Rights movement. Now women can have the same opportunities men have and this is thanks to the women in history who made that possible. To be a thriving civilization, women and men should both be given equal rights.
