Before winter, it’s time for everyone to start making their Christmas list at the last minute, hope for snow they’ll never have, and get sick (for no reason). Allergies and sickness are so popular before the start of winter, and for the whole season of winter. It’s hard constantly getting sick. Figuring out how to try and not get sick or help your allergies can be a little difficult. Everyone goes through the struggles of winter sickness, but nobody ever talks about how to prevent it or what to do to not make it as bad.
Prioritizing hydration and getting enough sleep are very important. Most of the time we may not feel as thirsty during winter. Why? Well, it’s because we sweat less during the colder months. However, still staying hydrated during this season is crucial. It keeps your body functioning smoothly incase of sickness. Water aids your recovery if you get sick and supports your immune system as the cold weakens it. Sleep and resting your body is just as important. Sleeping and getting the right amount of rest will allow your body to heal and assist your immune system in fighting off any sickness you may have picked up. Your recovery will (most of the time) be quicker and more efficient if you get a generous amount of rest while being sick.
A humidifier and maintaining good hygiene will be your best friend during the cold season. It can start to get dry indoors due to the lack of humidity. A dry environment like that can really irritate your respiratory system and make you more prone to illnesses or infection. Humidifiers lower your chance by keeping the air moist. This keeps your throat and nose moist, making you less susceptible to illnesses during these times. Additionally, everyone learned during COVID-19, handwashing is more important than some think. The amount of bacteria that you come into contact with is insane. While most of it is harmless and your immune system is strong enough for it, some bacteria our bodies struggle with. Handwashing regularly will keep that bacteria away from you and lessen your chances of getting sick. Avoid touching your face as well. If you need to touch your face, try washing your hands first.
Along with keeping your body clean, you should also keep your surroundings clean. Cleaning and disinfecting your home and things you touch plays a big part in staying away from the seasonal sickness. If you come home after a long day and immediately touch things without taking precautions, you have no idea what bacteria you are bringing into your house. Nine times out of ten you most likely touched more things than you think while you were out, now you’re letting that enter your home and get on furniture. While this is normal, if you’re specifically trying to avoid sickness, disinfectants should definitely help you out. Even a quick soap and water wipe down of the kitchen counter will thin your chances of catching anything.
While it might feel excessive to do all of these things, it’s better than laying in bed sick. Sometimes a small cold or sickness is unavoidable but these things will help for the most part. Incorporating these things into a daily routine will make it easier to remember and strengthen your immune system. This will reduce your likelihood of feeling like death over the holidays and enjoying your break off of school.
