What is the true meaning of Christmas? What defines and shapes it into the holiday that is celebrated throughout America? Sophomore Brooklyn West says, “Christmas is the spirit of giving and coming together with family to celebrate everything we are grateful for and to celebrate Jesus Christ.” Giving is a huge part of the culture of Christmas. It isn’t just giving gifts; it is the thought of those presents and showing appreciation and love through the gifts. For the Christmas holidays, families come together for meals, gift opening, celebrating, and enjoying each other’s companionship. West said, “I love the feeling of riding to my grandparent’s house and getting excited to see all my family and eat some good food.” The traditions made by all kinds of families make this holiday so special. It changes the meaning to fit each family and culture. While some have a more religious grasp on it, some just simply enjoy the special feeling they get when the holidays come around and love all the traditions passed down from their families. According to The New York Times, 55% of people religiously celebrate Christmas while 33% celebrate Christmas as just a cultural and fun holiday. Whether it is for religious reasons or to enjoy the Christmas season, people all over America celebrate Christmas and even start decorating straight after Thanksgiving! It is quite popular and most people’s favorite holiday. West stated, “Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year! I get so excited, and it all builds up right until Christmas day and I love seeing everyone smiling and enjoying the days with their family.” The music, spirit, weather, and decorations all add to the special holiday giving it a real homey feeling to the heart. The movies and stories all tell different versions of the same Christmas spirit. According to factretriever.com, “88% of Americans celebrated Christmas this past year in 2023”. Not only that but over 3 billion Christmas cards are sent each year in America. Christmas has been special for people since their youth ages. From growing up believing in Santa to now carrying on the tradition of Santa to their kids, there is always that “magic” when Christmas time comes around. Whether it’s carrying on traditions like setting out cookies or carrots, to leaving evidence in the house that Santa had been there, those are the unforgettable memories that make Christmas so unique and special. With school out on a break for Christmas, there is time to visit family or go out of town. Families come together to spread joy to kids and themselves. The true meaning of Christmas can not be defined by one word. Instead, it is interchangeable, molding to each family based on religion, traditions, and giving to others. No Christmas for each family is the same because no family is the same. Ethics, morals, and beliefs play a role in the way Christmas is celebrated. West expressed, “I have set out cookies each year since I can remember. Not even for my own belief but for my siblings and family which brings me joy to see them happy and excited.” Christmas isn’t just a holiday, it’s a feeling, a story, a belief, or a tradition. No matter what the spirit of Christmas will continue for many more years. The meaning is up to the people to decide what will make their hearts grow this magical Christmas season!
