At Cass High School, the bond everyone shares can be considered one big family. The atmosphere here is euphoric and pushes people to do great things. On and off campus, the football team shines through being more than just a family. As seasons pass, and new ones begin, there are new faces on the team as well as the familiar ones leaving. New coaches, players, staff, and more can change the way a team gets together. The bonds created not only bring the team but the whole school together.
The Colonels practice on the field over summer break and during the school year to reach the same end goal every season, to grow as a team. The season opener against Callaway on August 17th in the Corky Kell Classic showed they are in no distress. With an end score of 42-7, this season’s beginning was a drastic change from last year. The 2023 season had a rough start with a losing record, “Last year, we had a rough start to the season and the momentum started to shift towards the end but this year it is the opposite, which makes the team feel better going into the season.” After the amazing season opener, the Colonels came back against the Blue Devils (Model) with a score of 48-0, and 49-0 against the Adairsville Tigers the following weekend, demolishing the team completely. In the season’s first games, they started on better feet than before. Given that this was the absolute opposite beginning of previous seasons, the colonels have a different approach to the football season.
With this season’s opening, what is the rest of the season forecasted to look like? Football is a game-by-game sport; every game reveals the strengths and weaknesses of a team. The Colonels’ strong start is promising, but consistency will be key to their continued success. As the season progresses, they will face a variety of opponents from across the state, each game presenting challenges and opportunities to show how well-rounded the team is. Teams such as Hiram, and Cartersville are up next. While it might be tough, they will continue to show how well-rounded the team is.
Additionally, the support from the community and the morale within the team contribute to the team’s success. A senior at Cass, Hannah Stiles, states, “The student section has improved since my freshman year and brings more enthusiasm to the home games.” The support around the team from their fellow peers can bring more confidence to their performance. With the enthusiasm of the fans, the dedication of the coaching staff, and the commitment from their strong start and building upon it, they have the potential to make this season one of the best in the team’s history.
While the season opener against Callaway and their other wins have set a high standard for our Colonels, the path ahead is filled with both opportunities and challenges. Many challenging rivals await to see what the Colonels can do in the next games. However, they will need to stay focused coming up into the next games of the season. With the support of the Colonel family and their dedication to the game, they are well-positioned to tackle whatever comes their way and make a memorable impact this season and for the many to come.
The Colonels’ football team has set a promising outlook for the season with their impressive, and strong start. Their ability to adapt to changes, combined with their determination and the support of their dedicated community, puts good spirits into the atmosphere. As the season progresses, we will see what strategies the team puts together as they continue to fire the cannon.
