Lady Colonels Clash Against Wildcats in Region Doubleheader
On Wednesday, August 18, the Lady Colonels softball team was in action for their Region 7-5A opener game against the Woodland Wildcats. Both teams ended the day winning a game each, Cass winning the first, and Woodland victorious in the second.
At the start of Game 1, the Wildcats came out strong and scoring 2 runs, but the Colonels responded with 2 runs of their own, leveling the score. Thanks to an excellent defensive display, the Lady Colonels only allowed 2 more runs for the rest of the game. Rachel Lee played an impressive game pitching a full 7 innings with 4 strikeouts and only 3 earned runs. The offense was led by Alexis Woods, Haylee Dishmon, Saydee Najarro, and Ansley Hight all having 2 hits apiece with Hight hitting a three-run home run against Sr. Pitcher Lainey Baker to sail the Colonels past the Wildcats 9-4. “We got down early, but we didn’t panic. We chipped away and Ansley ended up hitting a big three-run home run,” said Cass’ head coach Taylor Washington.
This was the first time the Lady Colonels have won against Sr. Pitcher Lainey Baker, who was deemed by the Daily Tribune News Pitcher of the Year. It was an accomplishment the class of 2022 was extremely proud of. “She’s been pitching since sophomore year and this is the first time we have beaten her,” says Senior Left Fielder Kelly Young.
Fatigue eventually settled in and, the Colonels fell short 6-11 in Game 2.
Rachael played really well we had some good momentum going into the second game. We did a really good job at making adjustments at the plate,” commented Coach Washington. “Woodland made really good plays; they’re a really good defensive team. We would’ve loved to take a sweep but taking 1 is big.”
The two teams will get another chance to settle the score this season as they match up again on September 2nd at Woodland. The Lady Colonels will be in action again on August 24, in a doubleheader at Cartersville at 5 PM and 7 PM.
“We need to come out ready to play against Cartersville; they are a good team and we shouldn’t underestimate them. If we continue to grind, I believe we should be top 3, especially going off of this game,” said Senior 2nd baseman Eryn Lee.
