Who Are the Mysterious Twin Babies in Wandavision?
Contains spoilers for Wandavision episode 3
The third episode installment of Marvel’s Wandavision premiered on Disney + on January 22, 2021. In case you haven’t heard, each of the first few episodes of Wandavision will be centered and modeled as a sitcom from different decades. Using the same cameras and special effects used during these times, Marvel brings the nostalgia and fun back from beloved sitcoms, like Bewitched and The Dick Van Dyke Show. However, Wandavision is not set in the past or even during different time periods, but in modern times. The sitcom part of the show is generated by Wanda Maximoff who has the ability to alter reality, and while it hasn’t been confirmed, it is believed that she broke down and created an alternate reality. In this reality, her dead lover, Vision is alive and well, while the couple lives as a family jumping from one sitcom era to the next, and while it all seems like fun and games, there’s a dark mystery hidden within the show. At the ending of the third episode, Wanda gives birth to her twin sons, Billy and Tommy who eventually become the young heroes Wiccan and Speed. It may not seem like a big deal if you only watched the show, but these baby twins are actually very important.
According to Kofi Outlaw, from Comicbook.com, “Billy and Tommy Maximoff are actual characters (from the comics) that have a long and pivotal history within Marvel Comics history…” So why are these kids so important? Well for starters both become powerful and iconic members of the teenage superhero team, the Young Avengers, Billy is nicknamed Wiccan and Tommy picks the hero alias Speed. The Young Avengers have been rumored to be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU for quite some time now and the twin’s presence adds to fan theories that the Young Avengers are coming to the big screen. Some viewers of the show wonder how Billy and Tommy are supposed to become heroes if they were literally just born. The actress who plays Wanda Maximoff, Elizabeth Olsen explains that “ …We’re going through the decades of sitcoms for a specific reason…” Some people believe that this reason is that jumping from one decade to the next will make the babies rapidly age to becoming teenagers before the Wandavision finale. This could potentially make them old enough to become heroes without having to do a large and complicated time jump.
What else could be important about them? While it might not seem like that big of a deal, but both Billy and Tommy are apart of the LGBTQ+ community. Tommy has been confirmed as a bisexual, but his sexuality is rarely shown or talked about. On the other hand, Tommy’s twin Billy is actually one of the most popular and well-known gay superheroes in all of comic book history. Billy’s longtime boyfriend Teddy is another popular member of the Young Avengers known as Hulkling, who is believed to be introduced in MCU soon as well. When considering Billy’s appearance, it’s kind of confirms Teddy’s upcoming debut because their relationship is such a crucial point in both character’s developments and stories to the point where it’d be disappointing and even insulting to only have one of them in the MCU. As YouTuber, Grace Randolph states “If Billy’s here, Hulkling is definitely on his way.” She continues her statement by saying, “You can’t have one without the other.”
