In video game news, a new fuzzy and friendly distraction has made its way to the app store. Released in 2001, Animal Crossing debuted and the world had a new virtual living arrangement consisting of many animal shaped neighbors. With six games retailing in the Game Stop market, Animal Crossing expanded their franchise with a free downloadable app, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Free on all IOS and Android phones, the app first launched globally on November 21st, yet for all the down-unders (and fake Australian I-Tunes accounts) it was released the previous month. The game is free to download yet has in-game purchases of Leaf Tickets, used to buy objects and request various other services within gameplay.

Pocket Camp sells exactly what the name implies, a virtual camp—pocket-sized! The player begins by meeting K.K. Slider, dog guitarist and popular character amongst the Animal Crossing brand. After the encounter is the session with Isabel, the town’s mayor, and the selection of the player’s camp style, ranging from cute all the way to cool. Players are also supplied with their own campers which much like the campsite can be designed and withhold furniture. Pocket Camp has various lots within the map varying in beaches, bug collecting spots, fruit farms, and even a marketplace and the OK Garage for one’s camper renovation needs. The main goal of the game is to host as many villagers to the heart desire, which takes a lot of gifts and effort to maintain. The player can switch out, or in, up to eight villagers at a time once they’ve acquired the set needs in order to invite them to the camp. These needs consist of certain

friendship levels, obtained through requests, and furniture, crafted with materials collected from villagers through completing said requests. Every villager has a new set of furniture they need to fit their style, these pieces are unlocked every time the player levels up. Maintaining and leveling up friendships is the key to maintaining and leveling up all together! Besides running a friendship mill, players also have the free will to design their camp and camper as well as they please. Not only can they design their sites, but their characters as well! The marketplace consists of daily cycling shops which the player can buy from, one being fashion and its counterpart Tommy, owner of his own furniture thrift shop. The game not only has a cycling shoppers market, but the villagers as well shift in location, making the game all that more timely, much like any other mobile game. Not only is their furry comradery, but every player has a friend code that can be used by any other player in the game. Players then can access each other’s market box where one can buy and sell from one another. The players can also visit the others camp to give kudos, only adding to the sense of community.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp gives Animal Crossing a new mobile feel it’s never had before, possibly turning over… a new leaf.
