October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Although many associate October with the pull of pumpkin spices and local haunts, the month is shared with another event equally worthy of chatter and lengthy discussion: Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Created with the intention of spreading awareness, October houses many major events organized by charities to raise money for the cause and support victims of the disease. When asked about the purpose, the official NBCAM website says,“Since its inception 25 years ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes that although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams to identify any changes, scheduling regular visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare provider, adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about recurrence.”

The NBCF (National Breast Cancer Foundation) was founded in 1991 by cancer survivor Janelle Hail, who attributed her survival and recovery to her own foreknowledge. Her aim was to provide that same awareness to women everywhere; thus, with the work of her family and friends, Hail was able to create the NBCF. This is what drives National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and NBCF: the idea that mammography is the number one weapon in the war against breast cancer. Knowledge and cognizance are essential in the survival of women everywhere, which is why October’s month of raising awareness is so critical.
