It’s the most wonderful time of the year—Halloween! There are so many ways to celebrate the spooky season, but if you’re looking to get festive snuggled up on the couch, movies are the best way to go!

Here’s a list composed of 13 eerie films you can watch if want a spine-chilling movie night!

 

Films for the Family

These first 5 movies are great for scary movie fans of all ages. These movies will feed your Halloween spirit without having you too scared by the end of the night, which is perfect for younger kids! But don’t get me wrong, these movies definitely have some fear factor (the Other Mother from Coraline still gives me chills).

 

Corpse Bride (2005)

In this 2005 Tim Burton picture, Victor is arranged to marry the beautiful Victoria (Perfect, right, Victor and Victoria). Things go array when he accidentally proposes to a dead woman when reciting his wedding vows, and she drags him to the land of the dead.

 

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

This Tim Burton classic follows the king of Halloweentown, Jack Skellington, who is tired of the yearly tradition of scaring people. He discovers Christmastown and steals Santa Clause in order to take over the rule of Christmastown. What could go wrong?

 

Coraline (2009)

Blue-haired girl moves to a new home where she discovers a secret door that takes her to an alternate world that parallels her home. This Other house– with feasts, circus mice, and acrobats— is all fun and games until the Other Mother plans to trap Coraline there forever.

 

Monster House (2006)

What do you do if your neighborhood has a haunted house? Investigate it of course! Three preteens spend Halloween night trying to survive what lurks inside Mr. Nebbercracker’s house.

Halloweentown (1998)

This Disney movie takes a more whimsical approach to celebrating the jack-o-lantern season. Marnie is shocked and delighted to discover that both she and her grandmother are good witches. She must go with her grandmother to save endangered Halloweentown, the only place where supernatural beings can lead a normal life.

Halloween (1978)

Halloween (1978), written and directed by John Carpenter– the “father” of the slasher film and starring Jamie Lee Curtis–the first-ever “scream queen’ tells the story of Michael Myers who escapes the insane asylum to murder again after killing his sister 15 years ago. This film has inspired 11 sequels/spin-offs movies, so it’s perfect for a horror movie marathon!

 

Scream (1996)

Written by Kevin Williamson of Dawson Creek fame and directed by Nightmare on Elm Street creator Wes Craven, Scream (1996)  combines horror and comedy to produce a work of genius.  This film terrifies its audience with a masked killer yielding a knife to pick off unsuspecting high school students,  but it also manages to make fun of itself along with all the classic horror tropes through witty dialogue and dark humor. If you love this film, you can also check out its 3 sequels as well as an MTV series by the same name.

 

Friday the 13th (1980)

Although gravely warned against it, camp counselors set up summer camp at Crystal Lake, a woodsy area with a terrible past. Soon, they are all sought out by a brutal killer with a strong taste for vengeance. One by one, they’re picked off the campsite, and the counselors fight to save their lives. If you find yourself in love with this film, it has 11 sequels, and the 13th installment is releasing this month!

 

Child’s Play (1988)

This horror slasher series follows Chucky, a notorious serial killer that escapes death by transferring his soul into a doll. Chucky then continues his killing spree; however, he doesn’t want to stay in the doll forever. If you want to continue the Chucky saga, this franchise continues with 7 more films!

 

Malevolent Spirits

These titles feature evil spirits that seek to harm. Watch at your own risk, as these hair-raising titles can get quite intense!

Blair Witch (2016)

Heather and her fellow researchers vanished in the woods while investigating the legend of the Blair Witch. This sequel to a 1999 film by the same name takes place 17 years after Heather’s disappearance.  Her brother James and his friends, determined to solve the mystery of his sister’s disappearance, venture out into the woods. Could the curse of the Blair Witch be real?

 

Insidious (2010)

In this dark supernatural thriller, a family finds their home invaded by evil spirits after their son falls into a coma following an accident in the attic.  When conventional medicine fails to explain Dalton’s coma or the strange happenings in their house, the family enlists the help of a medium to fight the evil forces trapping Dalton. If you like this film, there are 3 sequels to sit and enjoy.

 

The Conjuring (2013)

Beware this movie franchise is based on true events! The Conjuring universe is made up of 7 movies, the newest one coming out just a few months ago. The films depict documented cases of famous paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren. The first The Conjuring film tells the story of the haunting of the Perron family and their five daughters. This franchise universe also includes movies like, Annabelle (2014), The Nun (2018), and The Curse of La Llorona (2019).

 

Paranormal Activity (2007)

After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence. Paranormal Activity is a suspenseful ride that will make you think twice about the things that go bump in the night. This is also a lengthy series, as consists of 8 films total, making it perfect for a marathon!
