Stars Who Lied About Retirement

Stars+Who+Lied+About+Retirement

It’s been 5 years since R&B artist Frank Ocean has released a complete project, and with his deletion of all his Instagram posts last December, fans were worried that he could be gone forever. Ocean is known for disappearing from the public eye and later resurfacing. Intersect Magazine even dubbed him “the mystery man of R&B”.  However, just a few weeks ago Ocean dropped his new luxury jewelry brand Homer, and fans are hoping this might be a front for a new musical project. It’s still not certain if he’ll be returning to music anytime soon.

Regardless, it’s not uncommon for celebrities to retire–either for mental health reasons, their own protection, or to perfect their craft through further training. Being famous isn’t simple; their whole lives are up for public opinion, and it’s easy to forget that celebrities are human too. But celebrities are humans, and it’s understandable that they might want to take time out of the spotlight from time to time. Although sometimes these celebrities decide they want to get back in the ballgame, and that’s just alright too. However, there are just some stars that can’t take retirement seriously.

Here are the top 5 times celebrities changed their minds about retirement.

Barbra Streisand

In 1999, Barbra Streisand declared that she was going on her farewell tour Timeless, and this would be the last time people would ever hear her perform live. The tour grossed 70 million dollars in sales, with the tickets being 1000 dollars a pop according to Marie Claire UK. Surprisingly, she returned to the stage again in 2006 with her Streisand Tour, which was promoted as yet another farewell tour. This upset those who previously believed they were watching Streisand perform for the last time in 2000, resulting in several lawsuits from fans.

Audrey Hepburn

The infamous actress Audrey Hepburn reached the peak of her success with films Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Roman Holiday, but, right at the height of her popularity in 1967, she stopped acting to spend more time with her family and focus on charity work. Of course, Hepburn couldn’t resist herself, and almost a decade later she attempted a comeback with the film Robin and Marian alongside Sean Connery.

Joaquin Phoenix

In 2008, the Joker star Joaquin Phoenix announced that he was retiring from acting to become—yes, you guessed right, a rapper! However, this seemed to be all a hoax, as in 2010 he starred in the mockumentary I’m Still Here, which depicted Phoenix’s transition from an actor to a rapper. Throughout the production of the film, Phoenix stayed in character during public appearances, thus solidifying the public’s belief of his career change. Who would have thought it was all for a movie?

Shia LaBeouf

After being caught up in a plagiarism controversy, former Disney star Shia LaBeouf made a statement on Twitter stating he was retiring from “all public life”, but just a month later he attended the Berlin Film Festival wearing a paper bag on his head scrawled with the words “I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE” on the front. It seems this may have just been a publicity stunt, as he starred in Fury with Brad Pitt later that same year.

Jay-Z

In 2003, rapper Jay-Z released his critically acclaimed project The Black Album, which was proclaimed to be his last album before retiring from music. He even held a final concert in Madison Square and considered it a “retirement party”. However, just a year later dropped a collab with the band Linkin Park and since then has released several platinum records. The rapper goes on account to say this “was the worst retirement in history”.
